A Preview of the First-Ever Downtown Syracuse Employee Appreciation Week

Downtown Employee Appreciation Art for Web6

Syracuse, NY – The Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. is partnering with several Downtown Syracuse businesses to present the first-ever Downtown Syracuse Employee Appreciation Week. The celebration – a series of free events, activities and fun promotions - begins Monday, September 17 and continues through Friday, September 21. Each day of the week is built around a different theme (outlined on the following pages) that highlights experiences found in Downtown Syracuse.

Most of the free events and activities are built around traditional Downtown lunch hours, but there are early morning activities and late afternoon/early evening activities as well, designed to capture Downtown employees at a point(s) in their day that are most convenient for them.

The idea for the weeklong celebration came about after the success of two Downtown Syracuse Coffee Breaks. While the events drew an estimated 500 to 1,000 people, not all Downtown employees drink coffee nor have the ability to step away for their desks in the mid-morning. Looking at Employee Appreciation events organized in other cities, the Downtown Committee wanted to plan an array of activities that would appeal to a variety of interests and encourage participation across the board.

“Our Downtown Syracuse workforce is now 29,000 people strong and growing,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee of Syracuse. “We have a diverse array of businesses that contribute to a vibrant Downtown location, and we have an opportunity to showcase many of these amenities through this celebration. The Employee Appreciation Week is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the employees for all they do to add to Downtown’s vibrancy. Whether it’s shopping or eating Downtown, bringing their families back on the weekends, getting together with colleagues, attending Downtown events, or volunteering their time in Downtown Syracuse, we wanted a fun way to thank employees for making Downtown their workplace home.”

Throughout the week, the Downtown Committee will field submissions in a “Post-It War Contest” which officially kicks off on Monday, September 17. Employees are encouraged to design a fun image or message on their office window(s). They may work individually or rally colleagues to participate. They must use Post-It notes to create the design, and submit pictures of the completed design(s) by Friday, September 21 at 5:00 pm to the Downtown Committee via email (mail@downtownsyracuse.com). A list of all daily themes and a sampling of events and activities are provided below. Please check our Employee Appreciation website for additional details and new additions. Staff will continuously update the website as more businesses sign-up to participate.

The Downtown Committee would like to thank M&T Bank for its corporate support.

Movin’ Monday, September 17: Downtown Syracuse employees are encouraged to start the week by attending free lunchtime fitness classes. They may choose between a Kung Fu lesson with Syracuse Kung Fu in Lemp Park, or join FHIIT Barre and Bodyworks for a Barre class in Clinton Square. Both classes begin at 12:00 pm and will conclude by 1:00 pm. All ages and fitness levels are welcome! The “movin’” theme continues with an evening of free dancing from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Persian Terrace at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown. Musicians Joey and John will play rock and pop hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s, sprinkling in Disco, blues and Swing music as well.

Tasty Tuesday, September 18: On Tuesday, the focus is on the taste buds. Anytime between 7:00 am and 3:00 pm, Downtown employees are encouraged to visit the Downtown Farmers Market in Clinton Square. They may come between 11:30 and 1:30 pm to listen to the Kambuyu Marimba Ensemble and/or celebrate National Women’s Health and Fitness Day with interactive fitness demonstrations, health and education booths and free healthy food samples. While they’re at The Market, they may check in at the Information Booth to enter a free drawing to win an overnight stay and breakfast for two at the Jefferson Clinton Hotel.  From 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, several Downtown Syracuse businesses will participate in a Tour of Treats inviting employees to pop in for free food! Also during this time, the lot at 484 South Salina Street – the site where the Allyn Family Foundation will soon build a public market and food hall – will transform into a pop-up food hall. Here, employees will be able to sample cuisine from six local entrepreneurial food vendors! Click here to see what’s on the menu and which restaurants will participate in the Tour of Treats!

Wellness Wednesday, September 19: On Wednesday, all aspects of wellness will be on display. Downtown Syracuse employees may take a free fitness class to start and/or end their workday. At 6:45 am, Metro Fitness will reprise its popular Sunrise Yoga class in Clinton Square, and at 5:00 pm, the Downtown Syracuse YMCA will host a free Barre class at Lemp Park. At lunchtime (12:00 pm – 1:00 pm), employees may choose to participate in one of four Lunch & Learns (descriptions of each are provided below). In all cases, lunch will be provided and served promptly at 12:00 pm. Sessions and demos will begin at 12:15 pm. Spots are limited; access registration links by clicking here.

Treat Yourself Thursday, September 20: From 10:00 am to 11:00 am, the Downtown Committee and Café Kubal will partner to present the annual Downtown Coffee Break in Perseverance Park. Employees will enjoy a free small cup of coffee and a snack. Then, employees are invited to experience all “flavors” of Downtown Syracuse by enjoying freebies and specials from participating Downtown retailers, restaurants and museums. Later in the afternoon, they may sip on Happy Hour specials from participating restaurants and bars. A list of all the specials being offered to date is posted here. Check back often – this will be updated as organizers continue to hear from interested businesses.

Friday Finale, September 21: The Friday Finale invites colleagues to participate in a series of office competitions and life-sized games including Giant Checkers, Jenga and Connect 4 in Perseverance Park. That’s also where the Downtown Syracuse YMCA and CH Insurance will host a Tug of War event and a putting contest respectively. CH Insurance will use the green outside One Lincoln Center, offering prizes and giveaways for participation!
