AmeriCU Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival Showcases Talents of 165 Artists from 22 States & Canada

Tuesday, July 14, 2015

1Art ShowLogoNo Datet Copy5Syracuse, NY – In less than two weeks, historic Columbus Circle will come alive with the 45th annual presentation of the AmeriCU Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival. Presented by the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. and AmeriCU Credit Union, the three-day festival is a showcase by some of the country’s most talented artists, craftspeople and entertainers. Recognized as the most prestigious show of its kind in Central New York – and hailed as one of the premier festivals in the northeast - the popular event brings more than 50,000 visitors into Downtown Syracuse every year.

“The festival’s variety of arts and cultural activities have secured it as one of the most-anticipated family events of the summer, not only in our community, but across our entire region,” said Judy Cowden, vice president of Member Relations and Marketing for AmeriCU Credit Union. “AmeriCU is honored to support an event that strengthens our community culturally and economically, which complements our goals as an organization.”

The Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. screened applications from hundreds of artists throughout the country, who were selected by a jury process. This year, the festival will showcase the talents of 165 artists representing 22 states and Canada. The festival features fine arts and contemporary crafts including both two and three-dimensional works, ranging from functional to decorative. There are ceramics, computer art, fabric and fiber, glass, jewelry, leather, photography, sculpture and more. A new trend this year includes artists who use recycled repurposed materials to create works of art, such as:

  • David Goldman, of Manlius, New York, who creates useful objects such as clocks and tape dispensers from discarded machines (Below, far left);
  • Hilary Greif, of East Windsor New Jersey, who uses vintage materials and found objects to create wall hangings, jewelry and free-standing pieces (Below, center);
  • and Charles Adams, of Osseo Minnesota, who shapes field stone found in Minnesota into beautiful sculptures according to character, shape, form, smith and weld iron (Below, far right).

The family-friendly festival also boasts a variety of professional performers including unique street entertainers, costumed ethnic dance groups, local singers, songwriters and musicians. Keeping with the theme of repurposed materials, be sure to check out Syracuse reverb artist Zeke Leonard, who creates and plays musical instruments from found objects.

“From the unique, high-quality talents of some of the best artists in the country, to musical performances and festival food, the AmeriCU Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival offers something for everyone,” said Merike Treier, the executive director of the Downtown Committee. “We are so excited for visitors to come out and experience our center city, and see how the arts and culture have contributed to Downtown’s growth and rebirth as a vibrant destination.”

The AmeriCU Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival and the Northeast Jazz and Wine Festival, traditionally held the same weekend, are anchors of the multi-faceted Artsweek celebration. Artsweek, which begins July 20 and runs through July 26, is collaboration among several organizations committed to showcasing and celebrating the arts downtown. According to a recent study, the AmeriCU Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival and other programming during Artsweek pumps nearly $3 million back into the community. For a complete schedule of events and activities during Artsweek, please visit www.ArtsweekSyracuse.com.

Funding for the three-day festival is provided by AmeriCU Credit Union and grants secured by Senator John A. DeFrancisco and CNY Arts. This year, the Downtown Committee is pleased to announce Dunkin Donuts will supply participating artists, craftspeople and entertainers with coffee and pastries as they begin each morning at the festival.

The AmeriCU Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival runs rain or shine 10 am to 6 pm on Friday, July 24th and 10am to 5pm on Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th. It provides an excellent backdrop to celebrate culture, as the Downtown Committee continues to spotlight different monthly themes related to Downtown’s accomplishments as part of its 40th Anniversary Celebration.
