Downtown Committee Announces New 360 Degree Virtual Downtown Tour
Thursday, January 22, 2015
The Downtown Committee of Syracuse announced today a partnership with Google’s Business View Photographer to launch a 360 Virtual Downtown Tour. The 360-degree panoramic imagery brings Google’s “Street View” technology off the streets and inside businesses and up into the sky. Users can get a bird’s eye view of the city, pan around the streets, and even get a 360-degree interior tour of the shops, restaurants, museums, services and accommodations in Downtown Syracuse.
The program is an initiative by the Downtown Committee to help promote downtown businesses and engage downtown patrons. The Downtown Committee is the first downtown association in New York State to launch this state-of-the-art Google online technology.
“This technology allows us to offer downtown businesses a unique, cutting edge marketing tool,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee of Syracuse. “We are providing users of our website virtual accessibility to Downtown Syracuse, that will potentially translate into more interest and visits to downtown.” The program supports the Downtown Committee’s January salute to downtown neighborhoods as part of its 40th anniversary celebration.
Several downtown businesses have partnered with the Downtown Committee and Google Maps photographers to offer this unique viewpoint. To date, the following downtown businesses feature the 360-degree Google panoramic virtual tour, which can be accessed directly through www.DowntownSyracuse.com/360Tour

The 360-degree views can also be accessed through Google Maps and in some cases, through businesses’ websites.
The Google 360-degree “Business View” tours are being offered to all downtown businesses. A Google- certified photographer will capture 360 degree images of the business and then create an interactive tour. Participating businesses will have their interior panoramic tour showcased on the Downtown Committee’s website, as well as Google Maps so people everywhere can see them. The tour can also be connected to the participant’s Google+ Business Page. Interested downtown businesses should contact the Downtown Committee at 315-422-8284 or mail@DowntownSyracuse.com.
The new technology also includes 360-degree “Sky Views” captured 200 feet above downtown areas such as Armory Square, Clinton Square, Clinton Square North, and the Oncenter. Users can also navigate throughout Downtown Syracuse and interact with “Street Views” of Hanover Square, Clinton Square, Columbus Circle, the Everson Museum of Art, and the War Memorial.
According to Jim Hilker, certified Google photographer, “The future of the Google 360 Downtown Tours will be even more interactive, bringing the ability for viewers to engage directly with the businesses inside the virtual display. For example, viewers will be able to reserve restaurant tables they see in the 360 tour, just by clicking on the table and filling out the form.”
