Downtown Committee Joins Upstate Women’s Health Network and SUNY Oswego Metro Center Celebrate National Women’s Health & Fitness Day

Syracuse, NY –The Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. is partnering with SUNY Upstate Women’s Health Network and SUNY Oswego Metro Center to celebrate the 14th Annual National Women’s Health & Fitness Day today, Wednesday, September 30. The organizations are hosting a Health Fair at the SUNY Oswego Metro Center, located in the Atrium Building at 100 South Salina Street in Clinton Square (map), from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. The event, which is free and open to women, is one of hundreds of similar events happening across the country designed to promote active, healthy lifestyles through physical fitness, good nutrition and preventative care.

“Our heath fair event presents a wonderful opportunity for women to make, renew and revitalize their commitment to live healthier lives through better health and fitness,” said Cathy Patrick, Coordinator for Upstate Women’s Health.

In the lobby of the Atrium Building, attendees will be able to get free blood pressure screenings, provided by SUNY Oswego Metro Center students, and flu vaccinations provided by Kinney Drugs.  Local food vendor Byblos Café will serve healthy lunch options, and attendees will be able to sample seasonal healthy tastings prepared by Dan Ellithorpe of Morrison Management Specialists such as apple and pear salad, apple pie smoothies and grilled brie sandwiches. There will be a variety of information tables, staffed by local health experts. Attendees are encouraged to sit in on one (or a variety!) of short seminars/mini-talks (each lasting about 15 to 20 minutes), covering a variety of topics such as nutrition and portion control, physical fitness, breast cancer treatment and maintaining a healthy work-life balance (Please find a complete schedule of the seminars on the following page).

At 12:00 pm, all are invited to participate in the latest Wednesday Walk series of the season: a guided tour through some of Downtown’s coolest meeting and event spaces. Participants will lace up their sneakers to walk through the Museum of Science & Technology (MOST), the Jefferson-Clinton Hotel and SKY Armory in Armory Square. Wednesday Walks, a collaborative effort presented by SUNY Oswego Metro Center, the Downtown Committee and several other health-conscious organizations, are always free. The walks are open to all ages and abilities, and step off every other Wednesday through October 21 from the corner of Clinton and Water Streets (map). Each 1-hour walk highlights a different theme related to progress and development throughout the Downtown community, while also encouraging fitness.

“We are honored to work with SUNY Upstate and SUNY Oswego to promote healthy living initiatives,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. “We hope all of our Downtown employees, residents and friends of Downtown will make an effort to check out the Health Fair. Between healthy food samples, the Wednesday Walk, informative seminars and free screenings, you never know what interesting, potential life-saving tidbits you may learn.”

The free and fun Women’s Health and Fitness Day coincides with the Downtown Committee’s Employee Appreciation Month, as the Downtown Committee continues to spotlight monthly themes related to Downtown’s

accomplishments and continued growth as part of its year-long 40th Anniversary Celebration.
