Partners in Planting Program Establishes Roots: Dressing Downtown Streets and Bolstering Neighborhood Pride

Friday, June 19, 2015

Syracuse, NY - The Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. introduced a new program combining employee engagement and downtown beautification. This afternoon, a group of employees from Young Leaders United, a division of the United Way, rolled up their sleeves to plant four flower beds at the intersection of Washington and Warren Streets in Downtown Syracuse. When they finish planting, they will trade their gardening tools for garbage bags, to participate in a downtown clean-up. The crew will work along the western gateway to Downtown at the Creekwalk, located at the intersection of Fayette and West Streets, ensuring it is attractive and welcoming to visitors.

The Partners in Planting Program is a partnership between Young Leaders United, Pioneer Companies and the Downtown Committee. It was developed earlier this spring to tap into the pride many downtown employees already have in their company and the neighborhoods they work in. By transforming downtown’s landscape through beautification and clean-up efforts, participants give back to the community by showing they care about the quality of life Downtown Syracuse presents.

“Planting flowers and participating in clean-up efforts may seem like simple gestures, but they’re big symbols of commitment,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. “We’re so proud of Young Leaders United, the first Partners in Planting participants. They’re encouraging walkability by presenting an exciting streetscape for visitors this summer, ensuring Downtown stands out as an attractive destination.”

“This group impresses me with their willingness to demonstrate their commitment to their community, the place they call home,” said Marianne Ferris, Director of Leadership Development at the United Way of Central New York. “This project is a perfect fit for Young Leaders United, whose motto is to connect with like-minded members at networking and social events; learn from experienced community leaders and executives through our Community and Leadership Education series; and serve as volunteers in projects that make our community a better place.”

“Pioneer is very excited to be participating in the inaugural Partners in Planting Program,” said Ginny Biesiada, Chief Administrative Officer of Pioneer Companies. “While our real estate developments extend over a wide geographic area, Syracuse is – and always will be – the home of our corporate headquarters. We are very excited to be involved in making Downtown Syracuse a vibrant place to live, work and visit.”

The Partners in Planting Program received additional support from Lowe’s Home Improvement, which generously donated gardening kits, mulch, top soil and the flowers used to fill the Washington Street flower beds.
