Record 1,498 Votes Determines Winning Designs in Second Annual Downtown Window Wonderland Contest

Wednesday, January 3, 2018

Syracuse, NY - A record 1,498 people cast their votes for their favorite window displays in the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc.’s second annual holiday window-decorating contest and – drum roll please – the results are in!

Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub & Restaurant, located at 301 West Fayette Street, takes the top prize of $500 with 296 votes. Owned by David and Cindy Hoyne, each of the eight windows depicted a different holiday scene or theme.
Vintage Love defends its second-place ($250) title from last year. Vintage Love’s windows were decorated with festive, vintage décor and peace signs, bringing the store’s motto “Peace, Love and Vintage” to life! Vintage Love, owned by Shauna Diliberto and Susan Hodell, is located at 201 East Jefferson Street.
The Changing Room, located at 425 South Warren Street, set the bar high in the contest’s inaugural year. This year, owner Kathie Morris’ “Heavenly Window” placed third, bringing in a prize of $100.

The contest saw an overwhelming response in its second season, with 30 Downtown businesses turning their ground-floor windows into spectacular seasonal displays. This represents a 25% increase over last year’s 22 participants. Of this year’s competitors, nine were return contestants and eight were brand-new businesses that opened since last year’s contest.

“The creativity of our merchants never ceases to amaze me,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. “Downtown Syracuse is a destination for shopping and a favorite part of many family traditions during the holiday season. The Window Wonderland Contest encourages visitors to explore Downtown Syracuse and recharges the streetscape by inviting folks to walk around, and step inside these unique, one-of-a-kind shops that have helped put Downtown on the map as a retail destination.”

The Window Wonderland Contest is made possible through funding provided by the Central New York Community Foundation. The contest, part of the Downtown Committee’s Art in the Windows program, is designed to encourage people to further engage with their Downtown surroundings year-round.

The Art in the Windows program showcases available storefronts as retail business opportunities by spotlighting the talents of local artists. The Downtown Committee matches artwork contributed by local artists with downtown property owners who are interested in enlivening their vacant storefront space(s). The Downtown Committee is currently accepting applications for those who want to participate in the next round of installations. Local artists, art galleries, and interested property owners are encouraged to apply. The deadline to submit proposals is next Friday, January 12. All artwork must be installed by Monday, February 5. To download an application, or learn more information about the Art in the Windows Program, please visit the "Get Involved" section of the Downtown Committee's website, by clicking here.
