The Downtown Committee’s “Partners in Planting” Program Welcomes Back Young Leaders United to Dress Downtown Streets and Bolster Neighborhood Pride
Friday, June 1, 2018
Syracuse, NY- This afternoon, 15 volunteers from Young Leaders United, a division of United Way, returned for the 2018 season of the Downtown Committee’s Partners in Planting Program. The Partners in Planting Program combines employee engagement with downtown beautification efforts to ensure Downtown Syracuse is attractive and welcoming to visitors for the summer festival season.
Members of Young Leaders United rolled up their sleeves to join the Downtown Committee to plant flowers throughout three visible streetscapes in Downtown Syracuse today. First, they helped make Hanover Square - one of Downtown’s most popular business and residential neighborhoods - “pop” with color. They weeded and seeded, and filled planters with purple petunias there and throughout City Place (located between State Tower and City Hall Commons). Finally, the group moved to the corner of Washington and Warren Streets to plant four flower beds fronting the University Building.
The Partners in Planting Program was developed as a way to bolster pride and engage downtown employees in the neighborhoods where they work. By transforming downtown’s landscape through beautification and clean-up efforts, participants give back to the community in a tangible way, improving the overall quality of life that Downtown Syracuse presents. The 2018 season of Partners in Planting is a partnership between Young Leaders United, Pioneer Companies and the Downtown Committee. The trio launched the program in 2015.
“Beautification efforts such as these encourage walkability and leave a lasting, visible impact on all who visit Downtown Syracuse. The locations are especially timely with the Taste of Syracuse happening across the way in Clinton Square this weekend,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. “We look forward to this afternoon every year, and we’re grateful to have the commitment and support that Young Leaders United and Pioneer Companies demonstrate in their faithful ‘planted pride’ for Downtown Syracuse.”
“With four seasons of participation now under their belts, Partners in Planting is a summer tradition for our Young Leaders United volunteers!” said Eileen Donovan, Account Manager in Resource Development at United Way of Central New York. “This group is committed to Downtown Syracuse, a place they call home, or in some cases, their workplace homes, and they take great pride in giving back to their community. This project is a perfect fit for Young Leaders United, whose motto is to connect with like-minded members at networking and social events, learn from experienced community leaders and executives through our Community and Leadership Education series, and serve as volunteers in projects that make our community a better place.”
