Voting Now Open: 28 Downtown Businesses Unveil Their Holiday Window Display(s) in Window Wonderland Contest

Friday, November 24, 2017

Syracuse, NY – The Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. encourages the community to enhance their holiday experience as tradition brings them into Downtown Syracuse this season.

Online voting is officially open in the second-annual Window Wonderland Contest, and the Downtown Committee’s seasonal staff members, Dash and Dot, the North Pole Downtown elves,  have returned for their 30-day stay in Downtown Syracuse to highlight meaningful gift options found throughout the central business district this season. Both promotions are designed to engage visitors and stir excitement about the diverse array of retail, restaurants and cultural offerings that Downtown Syracuse has to offer.

“Downtown Syracuse is a favorite place for holiday shopping and a centerpiece of many family traditions,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. “We hope that visits made by our Downtown elves and the displays created as part of the Window Wonderland Contest spark new appreciation for Downtown’s charms, and lead to new memories made – and new traditions started for our community.”

Both promotions - detailed below - are components of the Downtown Committee’s overall holiday retail campaign. Special holiday electronic newsletters – to be sent out every Monday afternoon through the end of December – highlight specials at Downtown businesses and all of the exciting holiday activities happening in Downtown. The community is encouraged to subscribe to the electronic newsletter by emailing mail@downtownsyracuse.com.

Window Wonderland Contest: A total of 28 Downtown Syracuse businesses turned their ground-floor windows into “window wonderland” displays. The contest is designed to entertain visitors and highlight the diversity of businesses and specialty retail shops located throughout Downtown Syracuse. The idea is that while people and families are out and about – whether it’s for the City of Syracuse’s Tree Lighting Ceremony this evening, Small Business Saturday shopping tomorrow, or the family traditions that Downtown Syracuse is home to this season – they’ll incorporate the Window Wonderland displays outlined in this map into their plans.

How to Vote: An “Official Window Wonderland Contest Entry” signifies a storefront’s participation. The community will be able to vote for their favorite displays until New Year’s Day, January 1, 2018. An online link is posted here, accessible by smartphones and desktop computers. The winning displays will be announced Wednesday, January 3. The business featuring the display with the most votes will receive a grand prize of $500; second place will be awarded $250, and third place will fetch $100. A list of all participants is provided on the following page.

The Return of Dash and Dot, the Downtown Elves: Meanwhile, Dash and Dot, the Downtown Committee’s elves, are taking a break from their duties at the North Pole, spending the next month (through December 24) in Downtown Syracuse. The elves will visit a total of 31 retail shops, restaurants, hotels and cultural institutions, spreading holiday cheer, and raising awareness about the unique gifts, activities, food and beverages that make Downtown standout as a holiday (and retail!) destination.  Each day, the elves will visit a new place, and post pictures of their adventures across the Downtown Committee’s social media platforms. Followers will be encouraged to guess the business locations of the elves by sending their “guesses” to mail@downtownsyracuse.com. Each correct guess will be entered into a weekly drawing to win gift cards to Downtown businesses. This is the third year of the promotion. Last  year, the contest drew more than 400 entries! Follow the adventures of Dash and Dot by following the Downtown on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Last year, the Window Wonderland contest drew more than 850 votes. It’s part of the Downtown Committee’s Art in the Windows program, supported by a grant from the CNY Community Foundation, which showcases available storefronts as retail business opportunities by spotlighting the talents of local artists. In the next phase of the Art in the Windows program, the Downtown Committee will match artwork contributed by local artists with downtown property owners who are interested in enlivening vacant storefront space(s). The temporary installations will be installed by the end of 2017 and remain in place through mid-April. For more information about the Art in the Windows program, please visit the Downtown Committee’s website.
