Personal Guardians: Creating a Tutelary Spirit Workshop

Throughout history, people around the world have imagined protective beings that watch over individuals, families, homes, places, and even ideas. These guardians have appeared in many forms—tutelary spirits, daimons, household deities, totems, guardian figures, and protective animals. While their appearances and cultural meanings differ, they all reflect a common human desire to create symbols of protection, guidance, and connection.

In this workshop, participants will design and sculpt their own contemporary guardian figure using Aves® Apoxie Sculpt. Rather than recreating an existing cultural or religious symbol, participants will invent a unique being inspired by their own lives, values, interests, or environments.

No previous sculpting experience is necessary, just imagination and a willingness to experiment.

This workshop is taught by Everson Teaching Artist Greg Lendeck.

Sound Bath

This free event is an opportunity for mindfulness,
meditation, and relaxation.

Sound bath practices are both ancient and modern. Across
cultures and epochs, sound has been used for deep rest and healing. Modern
neuroscience labels sound baths, and yoga nidra, as NSDR (non-sleep deep rest).
At such places as Stanford, NSDR is currently being studied, much like
mindfulness and meditation, to better understand its unique effects on the body
and brain.

Please consider bringing a yoga mat and a few blankets
and/or pillows to the event. You may also want to bring an eye covering. Be as
comfortable as possible.

Rewriting the Rules: An Altered Archives & Memory Workshop with Rich Harrington

What unwritten rules were handed to you as a child? In conjunction with his solo exhibition Fissure, artist Rich Harrington invites you into the studio for an intimate, hands-on workshop exploring the intersection of childhood memory, pop culture, and personal identity.

In this three-hour session, participants will learn how to treat personal archives—like childhood snapshots, old textbooks, and vintage games—not just as static history, but as sites for creative intervention. Guided by the artist, you will use mixed-media techniques including photo-manipulation, collage, text subversion, and vibrant color overlays to rewrite the narratives of your past and celebrate your authentic self.

No prior art experience is necessary.

Julia Kunin Inspired Hand-Building Workshop

In this hands-on workshop, participants will create three-dimensional forms inspired by Julia Kunin’s work in her exhibition Julia Kunin: Electric Dream Machines.

Participants will learn basic approaches to hand-building using clay and additive sculpture techniques. Students will be encouraged to experiment with form, color, texture, and shine. Final projects will be glazed with a high luster iridescent and fired for students to pick up the following week.

As an intro-level hand-building class, this workshop is designed for beginners and experienced artists alike who want to approach clay with a fresh perspective.

This workshop is taught by teaching artist Deborah Walsh.

St. Paul's Syracuse hosts Hohenfels Trombone Quartet

As part of its bicentennial event series, St. Paul’s Syracuse will host the Hohenfels Trombone Quartet for a Sunday, October 18, 4 p.m. concert at the church with the big red doors located at 220 E. Fayette St. Open to the public, the event will feature works from silent films, classical arrangements and fun songs. A freewill offering will benefit St. Paul’s Friends of Music.
Based in Rochester, N.Y., the Hohenfels Trombone Quartet was founded in 2011 and performs extensively throughout the Northeastern United States. Recent recital appearances include St. Joseph’s Cathedral Music Series in Columbus, OH, and a recital as part of Cazenovia Counterpoint (both with organist Amanda R. Mole), and a week-long summer concert tour in the Adirondacks.

Based in Rochester, N.Y., the Hohenfels Trombone Quartet was founded in 2011 and performs extensively throughout the Northeastern United States. St. Paul's Syracuse hosts Hohenfels Trombone Quartet

As part of its bicentennial event series, St. Paul’s Syracuse will host the Hohenfels Trombone Quartet for a Sunday, October 18, 4 p.m. concert at the church with the big red doors located at 220 E. Fayette St. Open to the public, the event will feature works from silent films, classical arrangements and fun songs. A freewill offering will benefit St. Paul’s Friends of Music.

A native of Italy, Peppino D’Agostino has made his considerable international mark as a musical artist on the guitar since he arrived in America 35 years ago. In 2017 Guitar Player listed him as one of the 50 transcendent superheroes of the acoustic guitar. The CD, “Every Step of The Way,” was awarded by Acoustic Guitar’s People’s Choice Awards with a Bronze medal for Best Acoustic Album of All Time. His signature Seagull acoustic guitar has been voted among the ten best signature guitars by Guitar Player magazine.Peppino gives guitar workshops, master classes, and seminars worldwide. Top leading publishers such as Truefire, Alfred Publishing, Hal Leonard, and Acoustic Guitar Magazine Books have published his compositions and instructional methods.Peppino and his wife Donna are the founders of the Music World Retreats, where they host music workshops across the globe and partner with some of today’s best instrumentalists and songwriters.To date, Peppino has recorded 19 CD’s, performed in over thirty-five countries at international festivals and concert halls. Bach as well as the standard “When You Wish Upon A Star” arranged by Chet Atkins paired with an homage to Walt Disney by contemporary composer Darragh O’Neill. Recent performances include recitals at the WCNY Performance Space in Syracuse, The Orangeburg Fine Arts Center in SC, the Niagara Classics Series in Ontario, Canada, and the Tenri Cultural Institute in Manhattan.Determined to reach new audiences, Ellis also curates special programs that couple music with either art, wine, dance, or historical events. He has presented these custom designed events at venues in New York such as the The Smith Opera House in Geneva, the historic Barnes Mansion in Syracuse, and Shelter Studios in Manhattan. Among his past projects, Ellis presented arrangements of rock and roll songs for the classical guitar at The Principle Art Gallery in Charleston, SC. Beyond performing, Ellis is a dedicated teacher offering private and group lessons through his Westcott Music Collective. Ellis serves as President of the Great Lakes Guitar Society, a non profit organization focused on providing music education and performance opportunities throughout the community.

The Riches of Harmony and Rhythm - A Cornucopia of Choral Favorites

A collection of
music that allows the singers to connect with the audience through close-knit
harmonies, imaginative rhythmic passages or, in some cases, the simple
beauty of text painting and vocal blend.

This project is made possible with
funds from the Tier Three Project Support program, a regrant program of the
County of Onondaga with the support of the County Executive and administered by
CNY Arts. 

Embellish It: Embroidery, Repair, and Transformation Workshop

In this hands-on workshop, participants will bring new life to an existing textile through embroidery, embellishment, and creative repair. Participants can bring an old shirt, hat, pillowcase, tote bag, or other fabric item that needs repair, feels too plain, or simply has the potential for something more.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to basic embroidery techniques before participants develop an individual plan for their chosen object. Through stitching, beading, patching, and other forms of embellishment, participants will explore how small interventions can transform an everyday object into something personal and expressive.

The workshop encourages participants to view imperfections, wear, and damage as opportunities for creativity. Rather than replacing an object because it is worn or damaged, participants will explore how artistic intervention can give it a new life and meaning.

This workshop is taught by Everson Teaching Artist Catherine Spencer.

SYRACUSE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA CONCERT - "Symphony Samplings"

This opening concert of the SCO's 6th season will feature both symphonies, sinfonias, and movements from both well-known and not so well-known symphonies by  Bach Johann Chritian Bach,  Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Joseph Haydn, Felix Mendelssohn, and Chevalier de Saint George. Admission is free and open to  the public.
