Tori Amos - In Times Of Dragons

A pioneer across platforms, Tori Amos is a multiplatinum singer-songwriter, pianist and composer who is nominated for a GRAMMY for the soundtrack to her 2025 New York Times bestselling children’s book Tori and the Muses. Today, Tori is thrilled to announce her 18th studio album In Times of Dragons due out May 1 via Universal/Fontana. Revered for building a multifaceted and unifying career of work defined by fearless activism and otherworldly musicianship, the new collection continues this storytelling tradition through a dynamic cast of characters. It is a powerful journey of resilience and awakening where the pursuit of freedom meets forces that seek to control and silence.

Developed Gesture Drawing Workshop

This workshop introduces participants to the expressive practice of gesture drawing using ink and unconventional tools. Working from live or reference figures, participants will create a series of quick, energetic drawings that capture movement, posture, and the essence of the human form.

Using extended tools like dowels and brushes encourages full-body movement and a more intuitive approach to mark-making. Selected drawings will then be developed further using layered ink techniques to explore tone, form, and depth.

No prior experience necessary, just a willingness to experiment and work freely.

This workshop is taught by Everson Teaching Artist Greg Lendeck.

Renqian Yang: Neither Here nor Elsewhere

Throughout her career, Renqian Yang has consistently embraced duality. It is unsurprising that her favored material is porcelain, whose dual properties are fragility and permanence. Porcelain’s uses range from industrial materials like insulators and laboratory ware to Ming vases and Meissen figurines. Porcelain begins as earth but, after firing, evokes transcendence. Despite its solidity, porcelain is translucent when held up to the light. Porcelain has beguiled and seduced artists and collectors for centuries.

Working in China, Yang has traced porcelain’s origins to its invention there more than 1300 years ago. Her Chinese porcelains reflect the angular shapes of China’s vibrant urban cityscapes but also contain organic elements that evoke human emotion. Imagery drawn from 20th century Communist prints mingle with deeply spiritual classical brush painting. In many of Yang’s works, pure white porcelain stands in stark contrast to vibrant colors.

Neither Here nor Elsewhere features works Yang made in her home studio in Oswego and during residencies in China and North Carolina, all deeply rooted in place while simultaneously reflecting porcelain’s ubiquity and universality. Yang makes porcelain a vehicle for inquiry, reflection, and self-expression. She brings together organic and constructed forms, personal experience and collective histories, her work exploring how emotions persist, transform, and connect humanity across time, place, and culture.

About the Artist:

Renqian Yang is an artist and Associate Professor of Ceramics at SUNY Oswego, New York. She received her B.F.A. in Ceramics from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China (2009), and her M.F.A. from Syracuse University (2014). Her work has been exhibited widely in the United States, the UK, China, South Korea, and Japan, and in 2024 was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London for its permanent collection.

Deborah Roberts: Consequences of being

Consequences of being brings together large-format paintings, works on paper, and— for the first time in Deborah Roberts’ career—ceramic sculpture. The exhibition marks a significant expansion of the Austin, Texas–based artist’s practice and a deepening investigation into the histories and legacies of colonialism. Roberts, who received her MFA from Syracuse University, uses collage to approach identity as something fragmented and continually reconstructed, reclaiming found materials and images to examine how Black bodies are seen, positioned, and understood globally.

The project broadens Roberts’ historical lens to include Germany, the Netherlands, and South Africa—nations deeply implicated in the exploitation of land and people. In these new works, she repurposes imagery and text from grocery store signage and packaging, referencing foods once discarded or given to enslaved peoples that are now reframed as delicacies. Through these transformations, Roberts considers how colonial histories continue to shape cultural identity, economic access, and the politics of consumption. While her figures bear traces of dehumanizing language and imagery, they are also imbued with presence, dignity, and spirituality, asserting survival and self-definition.

Roberts constructs her hybrid figures—often young Black children—through a distinctive collage process that combines found, manipulated, drawn, and painted elements. Drawn from the social and economic environments these children must navigate, the imagery foregrounds the precarity imposed by racial stereotyping and its impact on identity and agency. Her signature expanses of white space isolate the figures, intensifying attention to how Black bodies are centered, measured, and read in relation to structures of whiteness.

The exhibition also debuts a new ceramic bust, Zuri, named after the Swahili word for “beautiful” or “good,” affirming enduring cultural lineages and the inherent value, brilliance, and potential of Black children.

New Works in Clay

The Everson has a long history of working with important contemporary artists. Over the last 58 years, the Everson has produced solo exhibitions for Yoko Ono, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, Bill Viola, William Wegman, Carrie Mae Weems, and a host of artists who loom large on the world stage. No exhibition in the Everson’s history can compare to New Works in Clay by Contemporary Painters and Sculptors, a 1976 exhibition that involved bringing well-known painters and sculptors to Syracuse to produce a body of work in ceramics. The project was the brainchild of Margie Hughto, who served as both a professor at Syracuse University and as a curator at the Everson.

The Museum and the University shared a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to transform an old can factory into a working ceramics studio. Beginning in 1975, Hughto hosted artists like Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Poons, Anthony Caro, and Billy Al Bengston at the studio. Each artist was given a team of assistants, as well as access to technical advice from veteran ceramic artists. This flurry of activity resulted in the landmark 1976 exhibition New Works in Clay by Contemporary Painters and Sculptors.

For the first time in 50 years, the Everson will bring together ceramic works by the original 11 participants, as well as works by artists like Kenneth Noland and Mary Frank who participated in subsequent projects in 1978 and 1981. Five decades later, it is not unusual for clay to be a part of an artist’s repertoire. New Works in Clay explores how the Everson broke down barriers between art and craft and set the stage for the current ceramic renaissance in the art world.

Realities Within

Realities Within presents four enduring genres of artmaking to explore how artists shape, frame, and inhabit the world. Whether a landscape, cityscape, still life, or representation of the human body, these works show how each artist’s reality is impacted by their lived experience. Separated by genre and installed “salon-style”—a term inspired by the eighteenth and nineteenth century Paris Salons, where paintings were hung from floor to ceiling, covering every inch of wall space—the dense arrangement invites close looking and visual comparison, encouraging viewers to find connections across time, style, and subject matter.

The landscape section explores artists’ responses to the natural world, from expansive vistas to intimate views. In contrast, the cityscape section examines the built environment, capturing rhythms of urban life and the evolving character of towns and cities across America. The still life section turns inward, focusing on interior spaces and objects arranged and captured with deliberation. The section with representations of the body centers on the human presence, revealing varied approaches to capturing likeness, identity, and expression.

Featuring old favorites alongside new acquisitions, Realities Within offers a dynamic survey of artistic observation, highlighting how artists have continually returned to these genres to interpret the visible world.

A Long Look: Documentary Photography, 1888-2016

A Long Look: Documentary Photography, 1888-2016 traces more than a century of photographers turning their lenses toward the world as witnesses, advocates, and storytellers. From the late nineteenth century, when advances in camera technology first allowed photographers to record spontaneous moments, to the bold and colorful images of today, documentary photography has shaped how people see the world, both its past and its present.

Documentary photographers traditionally immerse themselves in their subjects. Bruce Davidson spent ten days living in the mining communities of South Wales producing his Welsh Miners portfolio. Aaron Siskind’s Harlem Document project plays out over nine years, showing the vibrant life of Black Americans in Harlem in the 1930s. Donna Ferrato has spent decades documenting survivors of domestic violence and advocating for their welfare. Documentary photographers reveal how sustained engagement with their subjects, over ten days or several decades, produces images that challenge stereotypes, humanize the unfamiliar, and deepen public understanding.

Spanning from 1888 to 2016, A Long Look invites viewers to consider the significance of documentary photography as a medium, asking how photographs shape collective memory and inspire social awareness. Documentary photographers must often navigate the tension between art and journalism, frequently occupying a grey area between the two. A Long Look is presented in conjunction with LIFE: Six Women Photographers to foster discussions on the relationship between documentary photography and photojournalism.

Everson Teen Arts Council

Each year, the Everson Museum of Art hosts a cohort of high school students from across the greater Syracuse area as members of the Everson Teen Arts Council (ETAC). For the 2025-2026 ETAC program, the Everson welcomed twenty artistically minded teens to explore the Museum and expand their own creativity. Through collaborative planning and discussion, this year’s cohort chose to focus on trying new artistic materials and working with the Everson’s team of guest artists and teachers.

Throughout the nine months of the program, ETAC members explored illustration, painting, figure drawing, cyanotype printing, and ceramics, which culminated in a raku firing of the group’s work. The works included in the exhibition are a mix of these material explorations, as well as selections from the students’ personal artistic practices. The Everson welcomes visitors to explore the group’s work and celebrate the accomplishments of the ETAC members during their time at the Museum.

Amy Lincoln: Fractured Light

New York-based artist Amy Lincoln (b. 1981) paints dreamy, atmospheric landscapes and seascapes recalling her childhood under the overcast skies of the Pacific Northwest. At once tranquil and vibrant, otherworldly and familiar, Lincoln’s imagined scenes of radiant suns, calm seas, and vivid foliage present a stylized version of the natural world in every color of the rainbow. An exploration of the phenomena of light reflection and refraction, Fractured Light is Lincoln’s first solo museum exhibition.

Lincoln begins most paintings with three colors that she mixes with varying amounts of white to establish a color system unique to each work. She meticulously builds up layers of paint, creating surfaces that appear to glow from within. Through gradual tonal transitions, geometric precision, and the use of symmetry, Lincoln’s paintings capture the feeling of light moving across a landscape. In a world saturated with rapidly changing high-definition images, Lincoln’s work offers us an alternative that encourages close looking and deep engagement with color, light, and form.

About the Artist:

Born in Bloomington, Indiana in 1981, New York-based artist Amy Lincoln paints dream-like scenes of imagined landscapes, atmospheric activity and vibrant, fantastical foliage. Recalling her upbringing in Oregon, where beach visits under overcast skies were frequent, Lincoln’s paintings explore the phenomena of light reflection and refraction. She completed her MFA at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in 2006 and her BA at University of California, Davis in 2003. Lincoln’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Sperone Westwater (2024; 2023; 2021), Taymour Grahne Projects, London (2022), Morgan Lehman Gallery, New York (2018; 2016) and Monya Rowe Gallery, Saint Augustine, FL (2016), among others. Her work has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions including Johansson Projects, Oakland, CA (2024), Columbus Museum of Art, OH (2023), The Hole, New York (2022), Sargent’s Daughters, New York (2018), and Regina Rex, New York (2017), as well as internationally at Galerie Valerie Bach, Brussels, Belgium (2020) and Taymour Grahne Projects, London (2022; 2021). Lincoln has been awarded residencies at the Wave Hill Winter Workspace program, the Inside Out Art Museum Residency in Beijing, and a Swing Space residency from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Columbus Museum of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia.

Nanni Valentini: Interspaces

Over the half-century span of its Ceramic National exhibitions, the Everson launched the career of countless American ceramists. In 1942 and 1958, the scope of the Ceramic Nationals became international, showcasing talents from both the Western hemisphere and Europe. On the advice of Italian artist Lucio Fontana, a brilliant ceramist in his own right, the 1958 Ceramic International introduced Nanni Valentini to the world. Valentini received a coveted purchase prize, and his work was exhibited on that year’s circuit, which included the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Detroit Institute of Arts.

By the time he exhibited at the Ceramic International, Valentini’s work had begun to move away from strict functionality. Although his studies were rooted in pottery traditions at the Istituto d’Arte per la Ceramica in Faenza, Valentini saw himself as a fine artist rather than craftsman. In the 1960s, he began creating conceptual wall-based ceramics that drew from exciting developments in Italian painting. By the 1970s, he produced a groundbreaking series of works called Trasparenza (Transparency), which further broke down the barriers between painting and sculptural object. Before his untimely death in 1985, Valentini established that ceramics were an inextricable part of the fine art canon.

In collaboration with the Nanni Valentini Archive, Fondazione Museo della Ceramica di Savona, and ABC-ARTE, Interspaces re-introduces Valentini’s groundbreaking work to American audiences.

LIFE: Six Women Photographers

LIFE founder and editor-in-chief, Henry R. Luce, was convinced that American political, economic, and cultural power would, and should, dominate the era he defined as the “American Century.” Photojournalism, or “photo essays” as he coined them, could effectively shape an authentically American vision of the United States as an international power, inspiring its people, in Luce’s words, “to live and work and fight with vigor and enthusiasm.” By giving readers vivid images of industrial strength, women and the family, race relations, World War II, labor, and the Cold War, the photographers in this exhibition contributed to this view of the United States as a global player seeking its identity on the world stage.Six pioneering female photographers were among those who contributed to LIFE’s pursuit of this American character: Margaret Bourke-White, Marie Hansen, Martha Holmes, Lisa Larsen, Nina Leen, and Hansel Mieth. These photographers were among the few women who were retained as full-time staff or on a semi-permanent basis rather than as freelancers. Their cameras captured events both international and domestic, wide-ranging and intimate, serious and playful. Central to LIFE’s reportage was the sometimes contentious relationship between photographers and editors, with each holding a stake in the ideology and content of the final essay. Ultimately, the editorial staff, not the photographers, chose which images would be published, and thus how each story was presented. In his prospectus for LIFE, Luce stressed the importance for one “to see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events…” It was not about reading but rather about allowing the images to tell the stories. These six photographers played a vital role in Luce’s quest to achieve that end.

6 Week Intro to Ceramics Workshop

In this 6-week introductory ceramics class, students will spend half of each class working on the pottery wheel and the other half exploring hand-building techniques. In this class, we will explore pinch, coil, and slab building techniques, in addition to throwing and trimming on the wheel. In the sixth class, we will glaze work to be picked up one week later, after firing. Students will use food-safe glazes to finish their own bisque-fired ceramic pottery.

Class fee of $350 includes clay, glazes, and firing fees. Only 12 spots available!

About the Instructor:

Catherine Walsh is a trained ceramic artist with a BFA in ceramics and a master’s degree in art education. She has taught ceramics at Buffalo Art Studio, Terra Clay Studio, Pearl City Clayhouse, Chautauqua Institution, and Niagara Falls High School in addition to creating her own work as Center Circle Ceramics, and working as Manager of School and Family Programs at the Everson.
